Australian Horseracing

Horseracing is one of the most popular spectator sports in Australia. In fact, it is the third most attended sport in the country, behind Australian rules football and rugby.

Thoroughbred horseracing is the most popular version of the horseracing sport in Australia while harnessracing hasn't yet quite reached the popularity levels of its thoroughbred racing counterpart. Besides being a spectator sport, horseracing is also an industry, and provides employment for almost 250,000 people.

Horseracing has become an integral part of the culture of Australia. Horseracing has in fact provided some of Australia's great sporting figures like Tulloch, Bernborough, Phar Lap, Kingston Town and Makybe Diva.

Australia is acknowledged as the source of one of the major developments in horse race wagering - the totalisator or tote - an analogue computer which allowed the automatic calculation of race odds given betting patterns.

The Australian public's interest in horseracing is especially highlighted during the main Spring and Autumn racing carnivals. Among the major horseracing attractions in Australia are the following:

  • Melbourne Cup
  • VRC Oaks
  • Caulfield Cup
  • W S Cox Plate

Horseracing in Australia is administered by the Australian Racing Board, with each state 's Principal Racing Authority agreeing to abide by, and to enforce, the Australian Rules of Racing. This body supersedes the power of the principal clubs, which were once the sovereign body of racing in every state until government reforms introduced separate governing bodies for the industry.

Horseracing Betting in Australia

The main avenues for Australian horse racing betting are:

  • Licensed on-track bookmakers that offer fixed-odds betting, mostly on wins and places.

  • Off-track betting through the "Totalisator Agency Boards" (TAB), which offered mainly pari-mutuel betting. These TABs have previously been under government control but many of them have been privatized.

  • SP bookmaking, which is a form of illegal off-course bookmaking in some parts of Australia.

  • Betfair, a person to person betting exchange, which has recently made inroads into the Australian market.

  • Online horseracing betting.

Harness racing in Australia is administered by Harness Racing Australia (HRA) (formerly known as the Australian Harness Racing Council), with each State's Principal Racing Authority agreeing to abide by, and to enforce the Australian Harness Racing Rules & Regulations.

Some of the major harness racing events in Australia are the following:

  • Miracle Mile
  • A G Hunter Cup
  • Victoria Cup
  • Inter Dominion
