Australian Horseracing
Horseracing is one of the most popular spectator sports in Australia. In fact, it is the third most attended sport in the country, behind Australian rules football and rugby.
Thoroughbred horseracing is the most popular version of the horseracing sport in Australia while harnessracing hasn't yet quite reached the popularity levels of its thoroughbred racing counterpart. Besides being a spectator sport, horseracing is also an industry, and provides employment for almost 250,000 people.
Horseracing has become an integral part of the culture of Australia. Horseracing has in fact provided some of Australia's great sporting figures like Tulloch, Bernborough, Phar Lap, Kingston Town and Makybe Diva.
Australia is acknowledged as the source of one of the major developments in horse race wagering - the totalisator or tote - an analogue computer which allowed the automatic calculation of race odds given betting patterns.
