Electric Ernie wins Winooka Handicap for Patrick Ryan!
Electric Ernie did his new trainer proud when he captured the Winooka Handicap on Wednesday at Sandown Race Track.
Under the guidance of jockey Peter Mertens, Electric Ernie made his presence felt from the midfield and orchestrated a ¾-length triumph over The Yartz. Macau Causeway was a further 1¼ lengths in third.
Warrnambool trainer Patrick Ryan is now looking to test Electric Ernie in better class after his fourth straight win.
His victory at Sandown Race Track was also his first metropolitan success.
Ryan had earlier managed to persuade Electric Ernie's owners, the Whinnen family, to train the seven-year-old even if he had already been retired due to degenerative arthritis in the hocks.
"I saw him win a 2,100 metre race at Wyong Race Track and I thought if I could get him right he'd make a good stayer," he said.
A combo of beach work and the help of an acupuncturist had Electric Ernie going so well he's won three out of three for him and four straight counting his 1,600-metre Class Three win at Hawkesbury for the Paul Cave stable before a 12-month layoff.
Ryan paid up for Electric Ernie as a first acceptor on Tuesday for the 2,400-metre Caulfield Cup but admitted the 2,30-metre Listed Warrnambool Cup next May as a more realistic target. |
