Horse Races are the premier spectator sport in one of Asia's most cosmopolitan cities, Hong Kong. Hong Kong horse races are acknowledged as one of the biggest, most organised and competitive race industries anywhere in the world. The Hong Kong horse race industry has also been a robust revenue-generator for the economy of Hong Kong. Nowadays, horse race betting turnover has nearly reached the HKD80 billion mark.

Hong Kong horse races are typically held twice a week for over 40 weeks a year, usually on a Wednesday night and on Saturday or Sunday. An estimated 1.2 million race enthusiasts are attracted each day.

Hong Kong horse races are conducted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. It runs 78 meetings a season, or up to 700 horse races, from September to June at two of the best equipped race tracks in the world - Sha Tin Race Track and Happy Valley Race Track.

In 1974, the Hong Kong Jockey Club opened 6 off-course branches where the members of the public could place bets on horse race meets at the club's Happy Valley race track. There are now in excess of 100 betting branches throughout the territory which accepts bets on horse race, on soccer and on lotteries.

Hong Kong horse race's prominent position in the sporting, entertainment and gaming life of Hong Kong can be traced to the indellible print of the British colonial occupation of Hong Kong. The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club was established in 1884 to conduct the races at the bustling territory. The Hong Kong horse race industry has come a long way since those days and now annually contributes over 11% of Hong Kong 's tax revenue. Off-track betting is available from overseas bookmakers.
