There are two types of racing surfaces at Sha Tin Race Track. A Turf Course which is one of the finest in the world and an All-Weather (dirt track) located in the centre of the turf course.

  • Sha Tin Race Track boasts of a turf course with a circumference of 1,899 metres.

  • The Turf Straight measures 430 metres

  • Sha Tin Race Track All-Weather course circumference is 1,560 metres

  • All Weather Track Straight measure 380 metres

  • Races at Sha Tin Race Track are run at a clockwise direction.

Sha Tin Race Track has the capacity for 85,000 people. It has two grandstands. Sha Tin Race Track also has 23 stables for a capacity of 1,260 horses.

Sha Tin Race Track History

  • In 1978, Sha Tin Race Track was first built under the administration of Sir David Akers-Jones, the then-Secretary for the New Territories. It was built on reclaimed land and is the larger of the two tracks in Hong Kong. It was originally built with capacity for 35,000 people and had a solitary grandstand.

  • On September 9, 2007, Sha Tin Race Track opened with record 1-day crowd of about 60,000. The Hong Kong Jockey Club collected US$106 million in bets (highest since 2001).
