New Approach captured the Epsom Derby at Epsom Downs race track on Saturday. New Approach, a 5-1 shot under the direction of jockey Kevin Manning, successfully held off a challenge from Tartan Bearer in the final stages.
The pack bunched up quite early in the race before Tartan Bearer quickened the pace with two furlongs remaining. New Approach, which fell toward the rear of the pack in the early stages, took over at the front and the Sir Michael Stoute trained Tartan Bearer was unable to regain the lead.
New Approach defeated the hard-charging Tartan Bearer by ½ length. New Approach was runner-up in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas . Favorite Casual Conquest finished four lengths back in third.
Earlier, New Approach's trainer Jim Bolger had said his horse wouldn't compete in the 1½-mile Epsom Derby at Epsom Downs race track in south London . Bolger entered the horse last week.
The Derby was first run in 1779 when Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, organized a competition for himself and his friends. It was extended to its current length five years later.
