Newmarket Race Track: The Home of UK Horse Racing!

Newmarket Race TrackNewmarket Race Track is a well-renowned venue for flat horse racing in the UK. Newmarket Race Track is located in the town of Newmarket, in Suffolk, England, which is acknowledged to be the nerve centre of British horse racing. Newmarket is the site of the most extensive cluster of training yards in the country. Many key horse racing organisations have their headquarters here.

Newmarket Race Track typically has about 40 racedays per year. Horse racing at Newmarket Race Track usually starts in the month of April and ends in November.

Newmarket Race Track Details

Newmarket Race Track has two tracks - the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course. The Rowley Mile is used for racing in the Spring and Autumn, while the July Course is used in the Summer.

The Rowley Mile Course, sometimes called "The Course of Champions" is a wide and galloping straight race track with a length of 1 mile and 2 furlongs with minor undulations towards 'The Bushes', two furlongs out. The penultimate furlong is downhill while the last is uphill, forming 'The Dip'. The uphill final furlong exposes stamina weaknesses. Races beyond the distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs start on the 'Cesarewitch' or 'Beacon' course which turns right-handed into the straight.

Among the major events held at Newmarket Race Track's Rowley Mile are:

  • Jockey Club Cup
  • Jockey Club Stakes
  • Cesarewitch Handicap
  • Somerville Tattersall Stakes
  • Fairway Stakes
  • Feilden Stakes
  • Pretty Polly Stakes

Meanwhile, the July Course of Newmarket Race Track is measured at 2 miles and 24 yards with a right-handed bend at the halfway. The first mile is part of the Cesarewitch course while the last the straight Bunbury Mile. All races up to a mile are on straight course. The course is undulating, rising the last furlong to the post.

Since 2000, Newmarket Race Track's skyline is dominated by the huge Millennium Grandstand. It was inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen in that year.

Newmarket Race Track History

  • In 1200, the land on which Newmarket is now found was given as a dowry to Sir Richard de Argentein upon his marriage to Cassandra, daughter of Robert de Insula, Lord of the Manor of Exning. The king almost immediately granted a charter to Sir Richard to create a "new market".

  • In 1622, the first recorded race at Newmarket was held. It was a match race between two horses belonging to Lord Salisbury and Marquis of Buckingham. Buckingham's horse won, securing a prize worth £100.

  • In 1660, Charles II began his twice yearly visits to Newmarket in pursuit of his passion for the turf.  Charles II rode on what is now the July Course during summer and on what is now the Rowley Mile during early spring and late summer.

  • In 1666, the inaugural Town Plate was run at Newmarket Race Track.

  • In 1671, Charles II rode his own horse to victory at Newmarket Race Track.

  • In 1750, the Jockey Club was formed at Newmarket.

  • In 1762, regular racing fixtures were started at Newmarket Race Track.

  • During the First and Second World Wars, Newmarket Race Track was the only UK race track to have held horse racing.

  • In 2000, the Millennium Grandstand at Newmarket Race Track opened.

  • In 2007, redevelopment in the July Course started.
