Nahoodh captured the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes on Wednesday at rain-soaked Newmarket Race Track. Nahoodh was thus able to recover from her defeat at the 1,000 Guineas and was also able to enhance her trainer Mark Johnston's status in the face of a similarly somewhat bleak 2008 season so far.
Nahoodh has been trying to erase her dismal fifth-place finish in the 1,000 Guineas while Johnston has been languishing in seventh place in the trainers' championship prior to the start of the July Festival.
Jockey Frankie Dettori let loose Nahoodh in the wet Newmarket Race Track over a furlong out and managed to stay on top of the competitive field. Nahoodh claimed the Falmouth Stakes with a 1¾-length triumph.
Infallible, who was a place ahead of Nahoodh 1,000 Guineas, came in second while the heavily-buzzed Heaven Sent was third. Both horses are owned by the Cheveley Park Stud. Mighty New Zealander Seachange was in fourth spot. Her connections have announced her retirement shortly after the Falmouth Stakes.
Nahoodh was transferred from Mick Channon to Johnston after Jaber Abdullah sold her to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum following her run in the Irish Guineas. Nahoodh placed sixth in the Coronation Stakes at Ascot Race Track.
Johnston said of the 10-1 shot: "It was only two days ago we decided to run her over a mile again, and I did have her entered over six furlongs as well.
"We were looking for a seven-furlong race but the lure of a Group One was too much. She obviously gets a mile and there are richer pickings at that trip so she will probably stay at a mile."
