After the opening quarter-mile, 48-1 shot Rumor Has It was able seize the pace, clicking off quarter-mile splits of :49.56 and 1:14.28 while building a nine-length lead over Canela on the backstretch in spite of the lax fractions.
After the first mile was done in 1:39.92, the back markers were moving into position, with Silverfoot making good ground along the inside. Rumor Has It faded quickly in the stretch as Silverfoot challenged, and was not denied. Only Telling, under jockey Eusebio Razo Jr., made much headway late after joining the leaders at the top of the stretch.
Canela held third by 1¼ lengths over Cloudy's Knight, the 122-pound high weight and 2-1 second choice.
The 3-2 favorite Lattice finished last while getting an inside trip.
Silverfoot, who carried 114 pounds, paid $12, $6.80, and $4.60 for his Arlington Park race track triumph on Independence Day. Telling returned $11.60 and $7.40 while Canela paid $12.80 to show.
Silverfoot's victory in the Starts and Stripes Turf Handicap was worth $102,000 to his connections. |
