Monzante wins Eddie Read Handicap!
Monzante captured the Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar race track on Sunday, July 20, 2008, defeating the favored Whatsthescript and the sentimental darling Lava Man in the process.
Monzante accomplished his Eddie Read Handicap assignment in 1:46.53 over a firm Del Mar race track ground.
Under the direction of jockey Rafael Bejarano, Monzante ran a classy race at Del Mar race track. Monzante quietly cruised along in the early stages of the race, showing no speed at that point, and content being at the tail of a consistent six-horse field.
Then, Bejarano conjured up Monzante by angling him extremely wide toward the far turn, and closed on the extreme outside at the furlong marker.
The pacesetting Storm Military was overtaken by the favored Whatsthescript at that point. As the favorite approached the finish, Monzante exhibited a blinding flash of speed and snatched the victory away from the equally-blazing Whatsthescript.
Whatsthescript came in second-place and was ¾ length ahead of the pacesetting Storm Military.
As the second choice, Monzante paid $8, $3.40, and $2.60 for his win at Del Mar race track. Whatsthescript returned $3 and $2.60 while Storm Military paid $3.60. Monzante's career mark is now 4-2-3 in 13 starts and total earnings are now $449,570.
Lava Man seemed to have lost heart and faded quickly to finish at the tail-end of the race.
"I had a perfect trip," jockey Tyler Baze said of Lava Man. "They just might be a little too tough for him right now." |
