Proud Spell wins Alabama Stakes!
Proud Spell captured the Grade I $600,000 Alabama Stakes on Saturday ( 16 August 2008 ) at Saratoga race track. Proud Spell finished the Alabama Stakes in a time of 2:04.08.
With her win, Proud Spell was able to reassert her position as the best 3-year-old filly in the land.
Under the able baton of jockey Gabriel Saez, Proud Spell had quite a wobbly start as Little Belle got the early lead. Little Belle established early fractions of 24.97, :50.22, 1:14.70 under the ridership of jockey Rajiv Maragh.
Proud Spell was able to wrest the lead away from Little Belle toward the far turn but was almost immediately tackled by Godolphin's Music Note, with jockey Javier Castellano on the mount.
What followed was a thrilling two-horse duel as the duo gave it all they've got to produce a classic finish. Proud Spell fought hard to get away from Music Note but encountered stiff resistance. In the end, Proud Spell gave just the right amount of persistence and speed to get the upper hand in the final strides of the Saratoga race track duel to win the Alabama Stakes.
Little Belle came in third, 4½ lengths behind, while Mushka and Sweet Vendetta were far back in the small field.
Proud Spell was the second choice in the Alabama Stakes and paid $5.90 and $2.60 for her win. Music Note returned $2.10.
Proud Spell had never finished below third spot in 11 lifetime starts. Her win in the Alabama Stakes pushed her earnings to $1.9million. |
